Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 9, 2026. Three days later, both models were gone.
What Happened on June 12, 2026?
On June 12 at 5:21pm ET, the US Commerce Department issued a formal export control directive ordering Anthropic to immediately suspend access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for any foreign national — inside or outside the United States, including Anthropic’s own employees.
The stated reason was a potential method of “jailbreaking” the model to identify software vulnerabilities.
Since Anthropic has no reliable way to verify the nationality of every user in real time, they did the only thing they could — they pulled both models globally. Paying enterprise customers, API developers, and everyday users all lost access overnight.
Anthropic Pushed Back
Anthropic didn’t stay quiet. They reviewed the specific jailbreak technique the government flagged and found it only uncovered minor, previously known vulnerabilities — ones that other publicly available AI models could already find.
They called the directive inconsistent and warned that if this standard was applied across the entire AI industry, it would essentially halt all new model deployments from every frontier AI provider.
That’s a pretty bold statement — and they’re not wrong.
The Amazon Angle
Here’s where it gets interesting. According to the Wall Street Journal, the government’s move was reportedly triggered by conversations between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and US officials flagging the jailbreak concern.
Amazon is both one of Anthropic’s biggest investors AND a direct AI competitor through AWS Bedrock. The timing raised a lot of eyebrows in the industry.
Where Things Stand Now
As of late June 2026, both Fable 5 and Mythos 5 remain suspended. President Trump met with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at the G7 summit and expressed optimism about a resolution, but no restoration announcement has been made.
In the meantime, all Claude API calls are being routed to Claude Opus 4.8 — still one of the most capable AI models available anywhere.
