Claude Mythos & Fable 5 Are Back: What Happened?
On July 1, 2026, Anthropic restored global access to Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5 — ending one of the most dramatic standoffs between a tech company and the US government in recent memory.

A Quick Recap: What Got Banned and Why
On June 9, 2026, Anthropic launched two groundbreaking AI models:
Claude Fable 5 — the most capable AI model ever made available to the public. State-of-the-art across software engineering, scientific research, knowledge work, and vision tasks.
Claude Mythos 5 — the same underlying model as Fable 5 but with safety guardrails lifted in certain areas, available only to vetted cybersecurity organizations through Project Glasswing.
Three days later, on June 12, the US Commerce Department issued an emergency export control directive ordering Anthropic to immediately suspend access to both models for any foreign national — anywhere in the world, including Anthropic’s own employees.
Since Anthropic had no reliable way to verify user nationality in real time, they did the only thing they could — they pulled both models for everyone globally.
The Amazon Angle
The ban was triggered by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy flagging a jailbreak technique to federal authorities — a technique that Amazon researchers had discovered could bypass Fable 5’s cybersecurity safeguards.
Anthropic pushed back publicly, saying the technique was already blocked in their testing and didn’t expose any unique capabilities. They warned the government’s standard, if applied industry-wide, could “essentially halt all new model deployments for all frontier AI providers.”
19 Days Later: The Ban Is Lifted
On June 30, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a formal letter withdrawing the export control requirement for both Fable 5 and Mythos 5.
On July 1 at 3:31pm ET, Anthropic officially restored global access.
Here’s what’s now available:
Claude Fable 5 — fully restored globally across Claude.ai, Claude API, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry.
Claude Mythos 5 — restored for a select group of US organizations through Project Glasswing. Still not publicly available, but the path to broader access is now open.
What’s NEW: Claude Sonnet 5
Alongside the restoration, Anthropic also launched Claude Sonnet 5 today — a faster, more cost-efficient model designed for agentic work and autonomous AI pipelines.
Sonnet 5 pricing: $2.00 input / $10.00 output per million tokens through August 31, 2026.
Engineering teams are already transitioning autonomous agent workflows to Sonnet 5 to reduce costs while maintaining high performance.
What the 19-Day Shutdown Taught Us
The Fable 5 saga highlighted something important: AI models are no longer just software products. They’re infrastructure — and they’re subject to geopolitical forces, national security review, and regulatory risk just like any critical technology.
Key lessons for businesses:
1. Model dependency is a real risk. Companies that went all-in on Fable 5 were forced to fall back to older models overnight. Having a fallback strategy matters.
2. AI governance is accelerating. Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Anthropic are now building a formal industry framework to score and classify AI security risks — so future situations like this have clearer rules.
3. Chinese competitors gained ground. The 19-day window handed time to international competitors. China’s Zhipu and Alibaba’s Qwen models made measurable gains in benchmarks during the blackout.
4. The frontier is now negotiated territory. Major AI model launches are starting to look less like product releases and more like government-reviewed deployments. That’s the new reality.
